John U. Trefny, Ph.D.

John U. Trefny, Ph.D. has served on Community First Foundation’s board of directors since July 2004.

Prior to serving as Colorado School of Mines president from 2000 to 2006, Dr. Trefny served as vice president for academic affairs and dean of faculty. Earlier he served as professor of physics and head of the department of physics.

Dr. Trefny received an undergraduate degree at Fordham University and a Ph.D. in physics from Rutgers University.

As a resident of Colorado since 1977, Dr. Trefny brings considerable knowledge of the community as well as management and fiscal experience to the Community First Foundation board.

Community Participation:

Trefny’s primary community interests center around education, from pre-college preparation (mathematics and science) to pathways and support for post-secondary access.
