Improving Lives of the Uninsured

Juan* was just a child when his family learned he had heart problems. But the family’s lack of income and medical insurance left them facing multiple roadblocks to getting their son the care he needed.

Fortunately they were directed to Clinica Tepeyac, a Denver health care clinic specializing in medical care and education for lower income, uninsured Latinos.

At the clinic Juan’s family received a dire diagnosis: their young son had a life-threatening heart disease that could result in his death within a year. But along with the bad news came the very good news that the clinic could help, both with medical treatment and financial support. Clinica’s extensive network of partnerships enabled the clinic to connect with a pediatric cardiologist. The doctor worked with the clinic to provide care for the son at no cost to the family. After surgery and three years of care, Juan received a clean bill of health and leads the full life of a healthy seven-year-old.

Juan’s family represents one of thousands of medically underinsured Latinos whose lives are improved through the clinic’s safety net of care. Community First Foundation supports the clinic's work by offering grants and services that further its long-term financial health.

Clinica Tepeyac exists to serve the medical needs of Latino families like Juan’s. These families may be uninsured and lower income. The nonprofit clinic provides direct medical care and promotes healthy lifestyles in both English and Spanish to lower income, working Latinos in metropolitan Denver. Clincia provides more than 5,000 patient visits annually. When combined with their outreach programs, the number of people served grows to nearly 10,000.
