Driving The Way to Independence

Melvin Thompson needs to travel to the grocery store, medical care appointments or adult day care virtually every day. “Without help from Seniors’ Resource Center I would not be able to live in my house,” says Thompson. “The bus gets me where I need to go!”      

Thompson is not your typical Seniors’ Resource Center (SRC) passenger. Although he is an older adult of 81, he is also developmentally disabled and lives in a group home. “I am very independent. I ride my bike, mow the lawn and grow tomatoes in the summer,” he explains. “But I don’t drive and sometimes it is too far or cold to ride my bike.” An inspiration to his older adult peers and developmentally disabled friends, Thompson moves about the Denver area with ease by utilizing SRC’s Transportation Services.      

Thompson is just one of thousands of individuals whose independence has been supported by SRC’s Transportation Services. The service provides rides to older adults and persons of all ages with disabilities in wheelchair-accessible vehicles. It enables access to services such as medical appointments, adult day care, meal programs and grocery shopping to ensure mobility, independence and self-sufficiency.

Seniors’ Resource Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of seniors’ lives. They work in partnership with older persons and the community to provide centralized and coordinated service, information, education and leadership, to assist seniors in maximizing their independence and personal dignity.

Community First Foundation has supported transportation services at Seniors’ Resource Center with more than $145,000 since 1999.
